How foods and nutrients work in your body
Food labels list numbers. It is harder to see what those nutrients do. Connecting a food to its nutrients, and to the body places where they act, makes the numbers meaningful.
Look for sources
Health information is only as good as its sources. Prefer tools that show where each number comes from, show missing data as missing instead of zero, and separate established roles from open questions.
Education, not advice
An atlas explains how the body works in general. For personal dietary advice, see a registered dietitian or your clinician.
How Body Unpacked approaches it
Body Unpacked: Health Atlas is a free iPhone app from Honest Little Apps. Everything below comes from its App Store description.
- Body Unpacked lets you pick one of 44 everyday foods and watch a graph draw itself from food to nutrients to roles to body places.
- Values come from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy), and each %DV shows its amount basis and the FDA reference it uses; missing data is shown as missing, never as zero.
- Nutrient Journeys follow each of 14 nutrients on an animated body map.
- A full text view carries the same information for VoiceOver.
