A room-by-room home safety checklist
Most home hazards are small and fixable: a loose rug, a dark hallway, a cord across a walkway. The trouble is noticing them and remembering to fix them.
Common things to check
- Loose rugs and cords across walking paths.
- Rooms that are too dark, especially stairs and hallways.
- Things that are hard to reach.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: test them regularly.
Make it a routine
Walk one room at a time, note what you see, decide whether to fix it this week, this month or someday, and revisit after the fix to be sure it stayed fixed.
